Bart de Kater (1986), clarinet, graduated cum laude from the Conservatory of Amsterdam where he studied with Herman Braune, Harmen de Boer and Arno Piters. During his studies he founded New Amsterdam Clarinet Quartet. With this ensemble he performed at, among others, Muziekgebouw aan het IJ and at the Concertgebouw van Amsterdam. With the NACQ he also made successful tours in Bulgaria, Portugal and Brazil. As A musician he likes to build a bridge between music and theatre. He collaborates with theatre companies such as Speeltheater Holland, De Toneelmakerij, Ulrike Quade Company and the National Opera. In addition to classical music, Bart also enjoys folklore music and plays the gavals de gaida, a Bulgarian traditional sheperd’s flute and bagpipe. Bart is part of the Dutch Wind Ensemble and has traveled to Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Poland and China. He also regularly plays with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, the Nederlands Filharmonisch Orkest, the Residentie Orkest, Ensemble LUDWIG and the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest and was part of the jubilee CD of the Calefax reed quintet called CalefaXL. He is also part of the new musical initiative called Splendor Amsterdam. Since 2017, Bart has been working as a Young Talent teacher at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
Bart plays on a Schwenk und Seggelke clarinet and basset horn, which he bought with the help of the National Musical Instruments Fund, Stichting Eigen Muziekinstrument and the Prince Bernhard Cultural Fund. With good weather and good wind, Bart skims the Waterlandse lakes with his sailing boat!
